Parenting Book Study

Adult education

What are we working toward as parents? What are we seeking to build? These may seem like simple questions. However, they challenge us and call us to have an overarching vision that holds all the menial day-to-day tasks of parenting together and sanctifies them with meaning and purpose. What we really need is a "big picture parenting worldview" according to Paul Tripp, "that can explain, guide, and motivate all the things that God calls [us] to do as parents," which is the goal for this six-week parenting class. The purpose is not so much to offer practical strategies (although we will likely talk about some) but to reorient us to God's call on parents—that is, to faithfully represent the existence, character, and plan of God. Parenting is a wonderful gift and a responsibility. Let's explore this subject together as we read and discuss Paul Tripp's book, Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family.

Relational Wisdom For Everyday Life

ADULT EDUCATION

“Wisdom” can seem like a word only for deep thinkers and philosophers or sophisticated experts.  But in the Bible, wisdom is all about relationships and having the skill to navigate them. It’s not rules to obey but principles to follow that, when discerned and understood, generally lead to flourishing. The alternative to relational wisdom is relational folly, which brings disorder and difficulty into our lives. In this six-week class, we will consider the kinds of things we deal with in  everyday life and everyday relationships (with God and with others), things like:

• pace and patience

• love and honor

• criticism and correction and conflict

• knowing and being known

These are the kinds of things that often get the best of us. For example, instead of a healthy pace we give in to sloth and idleness, or we go too fast by over-scheduling and doing every activity.  We desire to know and be known, to love and be loved, and yet struggle to listen in our conversations or to have self-control in our conflicts. Learning biblical wisdom moves us toward skill in the art of godly living, and grows our discernment and discretion so that we relate with growing competence and ability to complex commitments and relationships in our lives.
